Lymph nodes are a part of the complex lymphatic system in our bodies, and are responsible for the proper function of the immune system. The lymphatic system is made up of tissues that produce, store, and transport white blood cells and includes a complex network of vessels, ducts, lymph nodes, the spleen, the thymus, the adenoids and the tonsils. The tonsils and the appendix hold a well-defined lymphatic network. As they also serve to filter out and destroy bacteria, they may be called sister organs. Since their importance to the body is so great, these organs should not be surgically removed as long as they do their work. Even if something is wrong with them, it would be better to see what could be done with a view to healing them and so keeping them in the body.

What are the main functions of the lymphatic system?

Fighting diseases and infections. The lymphatic system is part of immune system that produces and releases white blood cells and other immune cells to fight against microbes and other substances.

Draining the lymph from the tissues. The lymphatic system drains the lymph (extra fluid) leaking from the body tissues and returns it to the blood system. If the fluid does not get drained, it results in edema (swelling) over the body.

Removing waste products and abnormal cells from the lymph. The lymphatic system filters the waste products and unhealthy cells from the lymph and removes them from the body.

Absorbing fats from the digestive tract. The lymphatic system absorbs fats, fat-soluble vitamins, and proteins from your intestines and transports them back to the bloodstream.

What does it mean when my lymph nodes are swollen?

The most common cause of swollen lymph nodes is an infection, particularly a viral infection, such as the common cold. Cuts, burns, bites, rashes, and any break in the skin can cause an infection and thus the swelling of your lymph node. Swollen lymph nodes can often be felt and seen, but not always. Some may be painful, others are not.

Stress, anxiety, and trauma can cause your lymph nodes to swell. In fact, there is a strong link between lymphatic system disfunction and your emotional state.

Why it matters?

Because your lymphatic system is the backbone of your immune system, clearing waste, viruses, bacteria, and other toxins from your body. When your lymphatic system is not working optimally, you are susceptible to brain fog, colds, extreme fatigue, rashes, depression, fluid retention, excess weight, digestive problems, unexplained injuries, arthritis, pain, and many other symptoms. It is when the lymphatic system is blocked and slow moving, wastes and toxins begin to build up. It can lead to diseases like cancer, tumors, hormonal issues, and more. Also certain heart disorders, the kidneys and the blood vessels can be attributed to a partial failure of the lymphatic system. Taking care of the lymphatic system on a daily basics is one of the most important foundation of health that everyone must be aware of. Healing the lymphatic system is the key to keeping your body healthy.

Did you know?

Western medicine didn’t really come to acknowledge the importance of the lymphatic system and its role in preventing illness, where Eastern medicine considers it to be the ‘water of life’

There are between 400 -800 lymph nodes in the body that constantly monitor and filter the lymph to remove toxins, waste and pathogens.

Unlike the circulatory system, it is a one-way system and has no ‘pump’, relying to movement, gravity and breathing to keep flowing.

There is a direct lymph-brain connection.

This is important if you suffer from depression, anxiety and high levels of stress. In 2015 University of Virgina researches found lymphatic vessels in the brain. In 2017 researches found the major outflow of cerebrospinal fluid is through lymphatic vessels.

The effect toxins have on our bodies can be seen in a number of conditions such as asthma, allergies, auto-immune diseases. Decongesting the lymphatic system may hold the key to rejuvenation and rebalancing of your body. It can help the many symptoms of autistic spectrum disorder, delayed development, ADHD and OCD.
